Throughout the winter months you may find that your home starts to lose some of its character and sparkle. From blocked gutters through to cracked window ledges, the slightest issue can have a knock-on effect and result in your home looking dull and uninviting. With summer only a few months away, now is the perfect time to focus on the maintenance required to bring your home back to life, so that you can have a warm and welcoming home for those bright summer days!
Bringing the Exterior Back to Life
From September through to March we see a lot of heavy weather conditions, with heavy rainfall through to snow storms this can really take its toll on your homes exterior. If you take a good look at your home, you’ll notice that the walls, driveway, window frames and doorways are looking lifeless. With excessive rain, wind and cold weather, these parts of the home will begin to gather much more dirt than usual, with heavy winds blowing debris around the garden for months on end. The best way to bring the life back to these areas is to focus on the main issues. You may find that your walls simply need a wash down, the driveway needs a quick once over with the jet wash and your window frames need a fresh lick of paint. All of these tasks are small and fairly quick to do, but they’ll make a huge difference to the way your home looks from a first glance. Another way to bring some life back to the exterior of your home is to give your windows a proper wash. Your windows are the only source of natural light within your home and having dirty windows can really affect the way your rooms feel and look. Similarly, the exterior of your home can be affected due to the fact that the dirty windows will instantly make your home look untidy and dull. The last thing you want is for people to see your home from the kerb and think that the person who lives there doesn’t have pride in their home or even care about the first impressions they’re giving. Whether you decide to give this task a go yourself, or you get a professional window cleaner in to do the job, you’ll be amazed at how much of a difference it makes to the overall look of your home.
De-Clutter the Gutter
It can be really hard to gauge what kind of state your gutters are in and 99.9% of the time they’re going to need some TLC. Most people don’t actually check the state of their gutter until they experience some overflowing or excessive water flow on a particularly rainy day, but it’s important to keep the gutters in good condition and check them frequently. Get yourself a ladder and check each of the gutters surrounding your home. Start by removing any debris or rubbish that has gathered up there and could cause a blockage, as this can become an expensive job if you don’t keep on top of it. You should then check the actual gutter pipes for any breaks, cracks or general damage that you feel could cause issues further down the line and if you need to, head over to your local building merchants, such as Milford’s, for the right equipment to fix the problems.
Preparing the Garden
When I think of summer, the first thing that comes to mind is having a BBQ with friends and family on a gorgeous sunny day and making the most of the beautiful garden. After a long winter, it can be hard to visualise the BQQ’s and garden parties with the current state that the garden has got into. Giving your garden some TLC is really important, as you want it to be in perfect condition for the summer days ahead. Get your lawn cut to a nice length, trim back the bushes and hedges, give your flowerbeds a fresh layer of soil and make sure all of the garden furniture is clean and safe to use. If you find that any of your furniture has become worn or damaged, throw it away and replace it with some shiny new items. The last thing you want is for your mum or dad to be sat on the damaged chair that happens to give way as their enjoying a nice glass of Pimms! You can find some gorgeous garden furniture pieces online here. Whilst you’re working on your gardens appearance and making sure it’s ready to host some fabulous garden parties throughout the summer, you need to remember the one item that’s going to make those warm summer nights even better. The BBQ is one feature that most gardens can’t go without and after a few months of bad weather, it’s time to wash down the barbeque and ensure it’s in good condition to get using! We have actually just put up a new fence which has really changed the tone of the garden and it looks so fresh.
