Lakeside Kitchen & Bar is a modern restaurant based in the beautiful country park of Ferry Meadows. The family friendly venue is a fantastic place to eat in Peterborough, featuring a full menu of delicious food and drink. And if you fancy working up an appetite beforehand, there is plenty to see and do in the surrounding country park.
The Peterborough restaurant focusses on popular favourites when it comes to its food. Tasty items on the menu include the Lakeside burger, fish and chips, sandwiches and hot wraps. You even have the option of a full English breakfast if you get there before 12! Seasonal specials include a soup of the day, made with a mix of in-season ingredients. Lakeside sources its food locally. As well as supporting regional growers, this cuts down the time your food spends between the field and your plate – ensuring everything prepared at Lakeside is as fresh as possible.
A recently installed log burner at Lakeside helps to create a cosy atmosphere at the restaurant. Outside, meanwhile, is a balcony that allows you to take in the wonderful views of Gunwade Lake and the countryside beyond. Gunwade, along with Overton and Lynch make up the trio of lakes at Ferry Meadows. These bodies of water offer an assortment of activities to visitors to the park, from pleasant, sight seeing walks to pedalos and rowing boats. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can even try out windsurfing and sailing.
The three lakes are home to an abundance of wildlife, including ducks, swans and geese. The birds always warmly (if a little greedily) accept food from people. If you do decide to treat the birds, unfortunately bread just doesn’t cut it these days. It is not part of their diet and can have an adverse effect on their health. But there are a few other easy to get snacks that do fit the bill! Corn, frozen peas and lettuce are all excellent alternatives.
On dry land, green, open spaces abound the country park, making the area a great place to walk your dog. Lakeside welcomes dogs and their owners. The venue has recently had an outdoor shelter installed where people and pets alike can sit under cover – even when it’s raining cats and dogs. You can hop on a miniature railway for a whistle stop tour of the park (see the timetable here). A wonderful new children’s play area has opened along Overton Lake. Called Badger Play Area, it features plenty to occupy the children, with a crawling tunnel, bridges, badger dens, a slide, climbing trees, swings and a wheelchair accessible trampoline among its arsenal of amusements.
Lakeside is open between 8am and 4pm during the winter, and 8am and 5:30pm in summer. Price per head for adults and big kids is around £8, while everything on the children’s menu is less than a fiver. The restaurant has onsite parking and is very easy to get to, located less than five miles from the centre of Peterborough and with great links by road and footpath to the nearest train station. The venue also hosts private parties so makes a great location for birthdays.
